Windows Mobile Device Center - Installing the Desktop Experience Feature

With Windows Server 2008, when you try and install Windows Mobile Device Center, you will see the following error:

The update could not be installed because at least one Windows component
required by Windows Mobile Device Center is missing

To resolve this error you must install the Desktop Experience Feature in Windows Server 2008.

Installing the Desktop Experience Feature in Windows Server 2008:

1. Click Start, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Server Manager.

2. In the console tree, click Features, and then click Add Features.

3. In the details pane, click to select the Desktop Experience check box.

4. Click Next, and then click Install.   You will be required to reboot to complete the installation.

5. Download and install Windows Mobile Device Center 6.1 x86 version.

6. If you have the x64 version of Windows Server 2008, then you must install the Windows Mobile Device Center 6.1 x64 driver.

Note: Once the Desktop Experience Feature is installed, you can enable Windows Vista themes on the server.  However I do not recommend that you do so due to the ram and CPU overhead of the themes.
